This
Fall driving event will be a fun-filled Texas History themed overnighter
in San Angelo, TX. We will visit some of the many attractions the
city has to offer, eat at local-flavor restaurants (all serving great
food, order from the menu, separate checks), enjoy a social, and play one of our world-famous
games for prizes Our headquarters will be the Marriott Residence
Inn, and we have reserved 10 beautiful Studio Suites (all with King
Beds) for the club.
On Saturday we will make our way to San Angelo on roads less traveled. We will head directly to The Grill for lunch.
After lunch, we will visit Fort Concho, which was built in 1867 to
protect frontier settlements, patrol and map the vast West Texas region,
and quell hostile threats in the area. It housed up to 500 men from some
of the most famous frontier units after the Civil War. It
preserves twenty-three original and restored fort structures.
After we get settled in our hotel, we will have a private tour of Miss
Hattie's Bordello Museum. Miss Hattie’s was an infamous house of
ill repute from the turn of the century until the Texas Rangers shut it
down in the 1950s. It is a prominent part of San Angelo’s history.
We will access the bordello through Legend Jewelers, a San Angelo
jewelry store which crafts and sells jewelry with Concho River pearls,
found only in the Tampico pearlymussel in the Concho River and its
environs. Dinner
will be at the unique Miss Hattie's Restaurant and Cathouse Lounge,
owned by Brenda Gunter, mayor of San Angelo. The restaurant used to
be a bank, and it had a secret tunnel to the bordello in case its
clients wanted to engage in some discreet extracurricular activities. After dinner, we will
go back to the hotel to play another of our world-famous games at the
hotel's meeting room - winners will get great prizes. After the
game, we will spend the rest of the evening catching up with old
friends, and hopefully make new ones, at the social in the meeting room.
On Sunday, we will see the San Angelo Riverwalk, which we will access
via the magnificent saddle-shaped San Angelo Visitors' Center and its
beautifully-maintained grounds. Then, we will visit the International
Water Lily Collection. One person owns this collection, and this will
only be 1/2 of 1% of the water lilies he owns and cares for. He rotates
the exhibit every year. It is located in a public park and he converted
the area from an eyesore to what it is today. Depending on the weather,
he will be there to tell us about his water lilies. We timed the
visit to increase the chances of the plants blooming while we are there,
but this depends on the temperature and the weather. Our lunch venue
will be at the Zero One Ale House, which also brews its own beer.
After lunch, we will drive back home on our own.
