Fort Belknap and Graham, TX, Saturday, September 17, 8am
SORRY, THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.

Join us for a great country drive, a visit to historic Fort Belknap in Newcastle, a delicious buffet lunch at the Graham Country Club, and a visit to Graham's Old Post Office Museum at the center of the town's signature courthouse square.

We have planned a very nice drive on country roads after we clear Fort Worth.  Our first destination will be Fort Belknap, which was established in 1851 as a northern anchor on the Texas frontier line of defense. The garrison protected travelers and settlers from Indian raids by the Kiowa and Comanche. Abandoned by federal troops in 1861, Confederate state troops of the Frontier Regiment occupied the fort at various times during the Civil War. Federal troops reoccupied it in 1867 before it was abandoned for good that same year. A handful of buildings remain in the park-like setting, and a small museum in the old commissary chronicles frontier history. Fort Belknap was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960.

After seeing the fort, we will proceed to the Graham Country Club for a delicious buffet lunch.  MBCA members and Graham residents Bennie and Dorothy Lane have graciously offered to sponsor our group at their private club.  After lunch, we will visit Graham's Old Post Office Museum, a historic building on Graham's courthouse square, claimed to be the largest such square in the country. The old building, which served Graham for 57 years, houses many artifacts from Young County history plus photographs of Graham and surrounding communities dating back from the 1800's.  After our museum visit, we recommend you explore the square at your leisure before your drive home.

NOTE:  Please sign up and pay your event fee as soon as possible so we can assure ample food and sufficient space for everyone.  We will close registration when our venues inform us we have reached capacity.  First come, first served.
